The four scope questions to ask about every proposal
Put every proposal through the same four questions and write the answers side by side. Where. Which zones does the scope cover, by name and square footage? Whole yard, or specific turf, edges, hedges, and beds? Does it include the shaded strip where your cards showed larvae? How. Granular, liquid, or both, and in which zones? What is the re-entry interval? Will furniture, toys, and pet bowls be moved? How often. One visit, one visit plus follow-up, or a season schedule? Which months? What triggers re-treatment and what does it cost? What else. Does the scope list habitat changes with who does them and when? Does it name hosts and how to reduce their cover? A proposal that answers all four in specific terms is a scope you can compare. One that says 'chigger treatment, exterior, $150' has answered none of them, and you should call and ask before ranking it against the others.
Matching the scope to your yard
Different yards call for different scopes. A small yard with one confirmed hotspot, such as the strip behind a shed: targeted liquid treatment of that zone, one follow-up in three weeks, and habitat changes. Whole-yard treatment here is wasted product. A large lawn with bites but no clear source: an inspection with cards first. If the cards find nothing specific, a single whole-yard granular application can reduce the population while you keep testing, but do not sign up for a season of it without a map. A yard with chiggers every year, dense hedges, and rabbit activity: a seasonal program covering the marked zones, liquid at the edges, with hedge lifting and litter removal done before the first application. A yard with mosquitoes and ticks as well: a bundled program is reasonable if chiggers, hedge bottoms, and bed edges are named in the scope. If the bundle covers only open turf, add a targeted chigger scope for the edges. In every case, the scope should shrink over time as habitat changes take effect.
Reading the proposals side by side and deciding
Make a simple grid: one column per proposal, rows for zones, method, visits and months, re-treatment terms, habitat changes, re-entry interval, and total. Read the zones row first. Proposals that name the same zones your cards and bite log point to have found the problem. A proposal covering everything has not looked, or is being cautious at your expense. Read the habitat row next. A scope with no habitat changes is asking you to pay for the same application again in a month. Then compare visits and re-treatment. Thirty days of re-treatment at no charge is worth more than a small price difference in a wet summer. Only then compare totals, and compare them over the season, not per visit. When you accept a proposal, ask for the zones to be marked on your sketch and attached to the service ticket. After each visit, check the report against the scope: same zones, same method, same re-entry. Re-run cards at three weeks. If counts fall and bites stop, the scope was right. If not, the grid tells you what to change.

Daily tick checks, the simplest and cheapest precaution, were routine for just 19.4% of U.S. adults in a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analysis of 2013 to 2014 surveys, a self-reported figure and an easy habit for any household to add. Thirty-six percent of U.S. homeowners in Mosquito Squad's 2016 Fight the Bite survey said they had emptied toys and similar items that hold water, a mosquito breeding site; the TNS Global poll was provider-sponsored and its sample size was not disclosed. Younger homeowners are far more likely to reach for peppermint oil than their parents were: 16% of Millennials in Forbes Home's 2024 survey of 1,000 U.S. homeowners reported using natural remedies, a self-reported choice with no evidence in the survey about whether it worked. Because every figure above has a stated population and date, you can cite it when comparing providers. What none of them can tell you is what your specific property needs; that still takes an on-site inspection.
